1, Which Country?

What better place for an overseas student to live than Australia?  It offers:

  •  Lifestyle - Australia is known internationally for it's sun and surf, where the people are friendly and it's unique flora and fauna e.g. kangaroos, koalas and other marsupials.

  • Multiculturalism - Australia is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world, accepting of all nationalities and religions. Each state celebrates diversity through festivals e.g. Buddha’s Birthday in Queensland. We also celebrate diversity through the food we eat. Australian cities offer a broad range of international cuisine - Vietnamese, Italian, Chinese, Indian and many more restaurants.
  • World Class educational Institutions and Facilities – Australia is home to quality education. Our education standards, research and facilities are recognised internationally. Our universities are ranked among the world’s best and are engaged in international collaborations from industry and research institutes worldwide.
  • Well Being - Australia is ranked by Nations Online with Norway and the Netherlands as one of the top three countries in the world on the Human Development Index (HDI). The HDI represents a broader definition of well-being and provides a composite measure of three basic dimensions of human development: health, education and income.
  • Education - Australia’s higher education system takes into consideration your prior studies. The Education Department acknowledges all forms of prior learning.  This means international students can be granted credit transfer or acceptance of their entire degree. • Australia's seamless education and training framework means that students can access a range of education options and move easily between levels of study and institutions.

Queensland

Queensland is one of eight states and territories in Australia. It offers students from around the world the opportunity to study, work, live, grow and succeed in a relaxed, welcoming and collaborative community. Queensland's key features include:

2. Which City?

Brisbane is Queensland’s capital city. It has a reputation as one of the world’s most livable cities. Why choose Brisbane?

  • Sophisticated but not overcrowded - Brisbane has a population of 2.2 million, making it the third-largest city in Australia. It also has the largest population growth rate of any capital city in Australia. Seventy-five thousand International Students enroll in Brisbane Educational Providers each year. Many of these students stay on to embrace local employment opportunities. It is the closest Australian capital city on the eastern seaboard to Asia.
  • Multicultural Community – More than a quarter of the population were born overseas.  Mandarin is the second most common language spoken at home after English. Students can access a wealth of post-graduate career opportunities. Many Brisbane companies offer internship and graduate programs which embrace cross-cultural skills.

How does Brisbane compare?

When choosing a destination to study at in Australia, it is important to compare how the city ranks based on your particular circumstances, how you want to live, your desires and your values.

Australian Government websites such as http://www.abs.gov.au provide useful statistics and information to inform this comparison.

1. Housing Costs

Accommodation costs are the main cause of differences in overall living costs due to the cost of housing. The choice of city can therefore significantly impact on living costs. Choosing a cheaper city means you can save money, live in better accommodation or have more money to spend on other things. The following table shows the large variation in rental costs between the Capital Cities.

2. Climate

The table opposite shows that choosing to study in Australia’s Capital Cities in Australia will provide access to a great climate - sunny days, long daylight hours, high average minimums and moderate average maximum temperatures. Again Brisbane compares well on all criteria!

3. Livability

Australian graduate surveys indicate that students typically want cheap accommodation, low living costs, a temperate climate, efficient public transport, a diverse culture, clean environment and plenty of entertainment options. Although these survey results are subjective, they do provide useful information. The Australian Property Council runs annual surveys that rate quality of living in terms of these key areas. The results of these surveys are summarised in the table opposite.

The above comparison indicates that Brisbane rates well on the majority of overseas student requirements and so would be an excellent choice for any international student looking to study in Australia. Further information on why you should choose Brisbane as your study destination is available on the Brisbane City Council’s websites http://www.choosebrisbane.com.au/ and http://www.studybrisbane.com.au/

3. What career and qualification?

Most occupations require a qualification. Search the internet, visit industry associations, speak to government and private organisations that can provide you with career advice, take online interest tests and speak to overseas study agents. Most high schools provide a career guidance service as they recognise the importance of this decision.

Students who fail to devote sufficient time and research to their career choice will unfortunately waste a lot of time, effort and money. They could also miss the opportunity to maximise their potential and future happiness.

4. Which Course?

Education institutions in Australia are given the freedom to design the curriculum for the courses they offer! However, they are then required to submit their courses to government agencies for approval to ensure that their courses will meet stringent quality requirements and standards and fit within the overall Australian Qualification Framework. This is essential to ensure that Australian qualifications are transferable and recognised across Australia and throughout the world. The mobility of the world’s population means that student exchange programs and internationalisation of education qualifications have become mandatory.

Australia has an online database system called the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). This is the official Australian Government website that lists all Australian education providers that can offer courses to overseas students studying in Australia on student visas and the courses offered. CRICOS is designed to help and protect the interests of overseas students and provide the necessary information for them to make an informed choice.

Under this system:

  • You can search for the information you require to decide which Institution (Educational Provider) and course that meets your needs. Information provided includes e.g. Field of study, Type of course, Foundation Studies, Work component, Language used, Length of course, Estimated total cost of course, Location etc.
  • Each Institution and Course is provided with a unique code that signifies Australian government approval.
  • The information included in the database is publicly available by accessing the CRICOS website http://cricos.deewr.gov.au/

5. Which Institution and Location?

As all educational providers to Overseas Students are approved by the Australian Government your choice is made easier. The quality, transferability of the Institution’s courses has been assured. Many Australian institutions have multiple campus locations and partnerships with other educational providers. Your research should then be focused on:

  • Location – Does the institution have a campus in the location you would like to live? Although the primary purpose of your visit is to study, your choice of campus and where you live will determine the quality of your life and happiness while in Australia. You will need to match your needs and interests to what the local community offers. Important considerations are hobbies, sport, entertainment, transport, accommodation, friends etc.
  • Cost of Living – The cost of living will vary significantly from city to cityand whether it is in an urban or regional location. Factors to consider are accommodation (type, size, locality etc) transport, food, insurance, lifestyle etc. Many of the local councils and educational providers provide estimates of these costs online.
  • Cost of course – The cost of tuition will vary from institution to institution depending on their ranking, popularity, ownership and course structure. You need to compare the overall course costs by accessing their website.
  • Pathway – If your electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) includes a package of courses provided by one or two other educational institutions (e.g. ELICOS course -Technical College; Diploma-Technical College; Bachelor Degree -University) then it is important to also consider the location of these Educational Providers as you probably will not want to shift your place of residence to attend these courses.
